Beer styles are funny creatures. They are ambitious enough to try encapsulate in one or two world what you should expect from any given beer, for example the term ‘Gose’ conjures up an image of dry, moderately tart and salty beer. This is made readily apparent when you get a beer that does not meet your expectation, this has happened to me on more than one occasion with beers claiming to be ‘West Coast IPA’, my image of a dry, hop forward, bitter beer with a clean malt bill clashes with the caramel malty bitter-sweet beer in my glass. Regardless of how well made, interesting or down right tasty the beer is, I cannot help but find it disappointing. The overwhelming positive of this is that it enables you to walk up to the fridge and have an idea which beers might suit you. The down side is what do you do with a beer that does not really fit into a style? Typically, you make one up by adding extra descriptors – such as the New England IPA which although it in no way resembles a traditional IPA in appearance or flavour this name does communicate that it is a well hopped beer. So, in the end so long as a the name informs you what it is you are about to buy no harm done. We didn‘t use any sausages in the brew! This beer is so easy and so delicious. You won’t be able to resist exclaiming “oh ya, das ist Lekker!” An easy drinking saison styled, blond ale, with soft chai and honey notes. – Brewers note ------------------------------------------------------------ Red Duck – Hop Shark Session IPA / abv 5.3 % 330 ml Bottle Ballarat, VIC – Australia $5.95 each Each in mixed 6pk $5.36 6 pk $30.40 For all our Hop Predators. Red Duck Hop Shark is a full on, super hoppy ale, with moderate hop aromas, and a moderate bitter finish. It’s a hoppy beer that is totally sessionable. We use Centennial & Cascade hops for bittering, starting with fresh wort hopping and progressing to a long, after-boil steep with more Centennial & Cascade, and finish off our Hop Shark with hot wort infusing over whole Galaxy hop cones. All-natural hopping means that aromas are not intense, but that the flavours and “hoppiness” are balanced and enjoyable. You might consider this shark to have the bite of a Wobbegong, rather than a Great White, which is basically the whole point! – Brewers note ------------------------------------------------------------ “I spent a lot of money on booze, birds, and fast cars. Before getting into the beers that have arrived this week, I would like to take this opportunity to invite everyone in to get (re)acquainted with some Pirate Life! Today (12/5) from 4pm the dastardly crew from Western Australia will be in store pouring samples. So, come along, drink some beers and have a chat. And maybe check out a few of our new arrivals. In this issue: Brasserie Cantillon – Gueuze 100% Lambic Bio Brasserie Cantillon – Rosé de Gambrinus Brouwerij Rodenbach – Rodenbach Caractère Rouge Brouwerij Rodenbach – Vintage 2014 (Barrel No. 192) Mornington Peninsula Brewery – Brain Squeeze New England Brewing Co. – Coffee Cannon Stout Rogue Ales & Spirits – Voodoo Doughnut Grape Guerrilla Rogue Ales & Spirits – Yellow Snow IPA ----------------------------------------------------- Brasserie Cantillon – Gueuze 100% Lambic Bio 750 ml Bottle Bruxelles, Bruxelles-Capitale – Belgium $ 30.35 each Straight 4pk $104.05 Mixed 6pk $27.32 One of the Great Beer Wonders of the World. One of the truly great beer experiences. A beautiful golden copper in appearance, earthy and musky in aroma with hits of citrus. Upon tasting you are greeted with an upfront, pleasingly sharp and lingering acidity backed up with musty and barnyardy brettanomyces character. A must try for any self-proclaimed beer geek or sour beer enthusiast. Blend of lambics produced during different years. Beer with a slightly acidic and fruity taste, delicate and woody fragrance and a dry finish that lingers on the palate. Beer with taste evolution that will keep for a long time in a good cellar. – Brewers note. RateBeer - 99 ------------------------------------------------------------ Brasserie Cantillon – Rosé de Gambrinus 750 ml Bottle Bruxelles, Bruxelles-Capitale – Belgium $45.99 each Straight 4pk $124.00 Mixed 6pk $41.39 Cantillon Kriek. Blend of lambics and raspberries - 200 g of raspberries per litre of beer. Beer with a slightly acidic, fruity and fragrant taste. Just like kriek, the “fruitiness” of Rosé de Gambrinus is at its best when the beer is young. With age the lambic will take the upper hand, but this is at the expense of the fruit component. – Brewers note. RateBeer - 98 ------------------------------------------------------------ Brouwerij Rodenbach – Rodenbach Caractère Rouge 750 ml Bottle Roeselare, West-Vlaanderen – Belgium $44.30 each Straight 4pk $151.95 Mixed 6pk $39.87 2013 Vintage. This is one of Rodenbach’s best. With lashings of cherry and berries, plenty of funky complexity and an astonishing level of balance between the sweet and sour components. RODENBACH Caractère Rouge was developed in 2011 in collaboration with top chef Viki Geunes (2 Michelin stars). This exclusive beer is created by adding an extra six months’ fermenting maceration with cherries, raspberries and cranberries to beer that has already undergone two years’ maturation in oak casks. The result is an exceptional RODENBACH with a 7% alcohol by volume. RODENBACH Caractère Rouge is vinous with a very complex, fruity nose of raspberry and cherry combined with notes of wood and caramel. The undertone consists of an aroma of violets, leather and a hint of tobacco. The taste is rather sour but exceptionally pure. With its long, clean aftertaste and its unique combination of delicacy and strength, RODENBACH Caractère Rouge is reminiscent of a crisp Burgundy wine. This noble beer is unique and exclusive. In his restaurant ’t Zilte, Viki Geunes combines this willful beer with his sophisticated gastronomic creations. – Brewers note. RateBeer - 100 ------------------------------------------------------------ Brouwerij Rodenbach – Vintage 2014 (Barrel No. 192) 750 ml Bottle Roeselare, West-Vlaanderen – Belgium $41.25 each Straight 4pk $141.40 Mixed 6pk $37.13 Fermented in a 61-Year-Old Oak! Limited edition Rodenbach Vintage 2014 was aged for two years in foeder no. 192. The 61-years old foeder was carefully selected by the brew-master Rudi Ghequire as top performing foeder of the year. It became an expceptional Flemish red-brown sour ale with a uniquely balanced sour and sweet palette with a complex aftertaste. – Brewers note. RateBeer - 99 ------------------------------------------------------------ Mornington Peninsula Brewery – Brain Squeeze 330 ml Can Mornington, VIC – Australia $5.25 each Straight 4pk $17.99 Mixed 6pk $4.73 Pucker up that Grey Matter. The combined might of kettle- souring and dry hopping has produced a beverage with an orange juice like tartness and flavour that is endlessly drinkable and delightful tasty. Brain Squeeze combines the modern techniques of kettle-souring and dry hopping to deliver wicked flavours of punchy tropical fruits and fresh squeezed citrus, followed by a cleansing acidity that is not for the faint hearted. Drink fresh. – Brewers note. ------------------------------------------------------------ New England Brewing Co. – Coffee Cannon Stout 640 ml Bottle Uralla, NSW – Australia $10.35 each Straight 4pk $36.15 Mixed 6pk $9.32 Uppers and Downers. Traditionally a hop cannon is a piece of equipment that allows brewers to get better utilisation of the hops when dry hopping their beer during conditioning, either by recirculating the still conditioning beer through hops to allow the greater hop contact and therefore more flavour or by firing (using CO2) hops directly into the conditioning beer. But in this case the fine folks at New England, in Uralla, decided to load their hop cannon up with coffee from Artisti Coffee Roasters to infuse this delightful stout. Coffee cold filtered through the hop cannon imparting a beautiful roast flavour. Still not awake yet? You will be now! – Brewers note. ------------------------------------------------------------ Rogue Ales & Spirits – Voodoo Doughnut Grape Guerrilla 640 ml Bottle Newport, OR – United States $36.99 each Straight 4pk $126.90 Mixed 6pk $33.30 In Collaboration with Voodoo Doughnut Bakery. This ale was inspired by the Voodoo Doughnut Grape Ape doughnut, a creation that features vanilla frosting, grape dust and purple sprinkles. – Brewers note. ------------------------------------------------------------ Rogue Ales & Spirits – Yellow Snow IPA 445 ml Can Newport, OR – United States $9.99 each Straight 4pk $34.55 Mixed 6pk $8.99 Don’t Eat the Yellow Snow – Drink it. Pale golden in colour with a hoppy fruity aroma. Big hop flavour up front complemented by medium body and hoppyness mid-pallet. Finishes with a characteristic lingering bitterness. 7 Ingredients: Cara Foam, Melanoiden & Great Western 2-Row Malts; Amarillo & Perle Hops, Free Range Coastal Water & Pacman Yeast. Yellow Snow IPA was originally introduced for the 2000 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. Yellow Snow is Rogue’s tribute to winter sports everywhere—downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross country, ice hockey, ice fishing, snowmobiling, and even curling. It will be available November 1st in select states where mountains and snow can be found. – Brewers note.
